Mepiform Mepiform silicone dressing for scars 10×18cm, 1 bandage

I bought a silicone patch from Scar Fix (USA) to replace Mepiform.

The Scar Fix plate is transparent, covered on both sides with a protective film, in paper packaging, description in Russian, shelf life 8 years. Usage period: up to 3 months, 12 hours a day.

The essence of the action of silicone on the scar: oxygen and moisture transfer to the skin are blocked, a “greenhouse” effect, the scar becomes softer, smoothes out, brightens, and is protected from external damage and scratching.

Before use, I washed the scar with water, wiped it dry, removed the protective films from the plate and glued it (it sticks well) so that the edges of the plate protrude half a centimeter beyond the edges of the scar.

The plate can be additionally fixed with compression hosiery, elastic or self-fixing bandage, etc. If a rash or redness appears under the plate, it is necessary to remove the plate until these symptoms disappear. Do not apply creams, ointments, or other medications under the plate.

Silicone plates can be washed with soapy water and running water. The plate can be cut (in the photo I cut a piece from the edge of the plate).

Composition: dimethyl methyl vinyl siloxane, dimethyl methyl hydrogen methyl vinyl silicone gel.

Price: 1900-2500 rub. depending on the store 10x20 cm in 2015.

  • I use the patch for a child on hypertrophic and keloid scars after a 3A degree thermal burn.
  • Photos before (left) and after 12 hours of wearing the patch (right). Shot from slightly different angles, but I think the gist is clear:

After wearing the silicone patch, the scar became softer. Where it is impossible to use patches (for example, on moving parts of the body or bends), I used silicone gels.

We wore the patch mainly at night under compression hosiery for a year (scars were treated comprehensively - compression, silicone patches and gels, physiotherapy with Fermenkol) and this is what we got:

Keloid scars after complex therapy a year later

I am sure that if you had the money and time, you could achieve almost perfect hand skin by undergoing treatment, for example, in a sanatorium according to a special anti-scar regimen, and also by continuing medicinal electrophoresis for another year. But we have finished our treatment for now.

Mepiform patch - analogues, instructions, price, reviews

When the skin heals after operations, burns, cuts and injuries, a rough mark remains, a clumsy protrusion that stands out in color.

It is formed by the layering of new cells on old ones, deprived of nutrition due to damage to the capillary system. Silicone softens the surface, preventing it from drying out.

It is the basis of most patches, including Mepiform for the treatment and resorption of rough scars and keloid sutures.

Formation of scars and methods for their removal

Clinics, depending on the equipment they have, offer excision of protruding rough tissue using surgical methods, laser and cold. Operations are expensive and painful. They incapacitate a person for a long period. The effect is not always positive. After a while, the skin may become rough again, begin to itch, and create discomfort.

To smooth the skin at home, there are ointments, gels and patches from the following companies:

  • Mepiform.
  • Contractubex.
  • Dermatix.
  • Scarfix.
  • Chinese.
  • Korean.

Most of them are based on the ability of silicone to soften and smooth out rough tissue. According to the nature of origin and appearance, scars are distinguished:

  • Hypertrophic.
  • Normotrophic.
  • Keloids are colloidal.

The first ones arise after a violation of the integrity of tissues as a result of operations, cuts, abrasions. They protrude slightly above the surface and differ in color. Burns and wounds of large areas leave dark, non-protruding marks.

Keloid scars appear for reasons that have not yet been studied. They are red, with a bluish tint, and protrude strongly above the surface of the skin. They have colloidal scars, an irregular, clumsy shape, and their photographs look terrifying.

They can grow constantly.

Mepiform patch for scar resorption

Silicone patch Mepiform is sold in pharmacies without a prescription. It can be freely purchased in Perm and other cities, or ordered online. The effect of application is demonstrated in the photo. After using Mepiform for 2 - 3 months, the scars soften, keloids change their color.

Pharmacy patch for scars Mepiform consists of a non-woven base impregnated with pure medical silicone. It does not have an adhesive layer and, due to the material, sticks to the surface of the body.

The silicone scar patch is flesh-colored and invisible on the skin. It can be worn constantly. The thin film does not interfere with clothing and does not hinder movement, even if it is on a bend.

At the same time, the sticker is protected from UV radiation.

Instructions for use recommend removing Mepiform once a day for 2 or 3 hours. Wash the scar with warm water and wipe dry. There is no need to put too much pressure or stretch the skin around the scar. Then stick the patch back on the same place. Repeated use is possible due to the special structure of silicone.

A favorable atmosphere is created under the film for the development of young cells. The gel does not let moisture out and puts pressure on the protruding tissue. As a result, scars are treated.

The effect of wearing a patch depends on the neglect of the scar and the characteristics of the body. Fresh seams can be removed within 6 months.

Neglected, rough scars go away in 2 years; for burns and lacerations, you will have to periodically apply a patch for 3 years.

Wait until the wound is dry before removing cut scars. During this time, the edges can be pulled together and glued with a paper bandage, then the effect will be better.

Mepiform - how does the scar patch work?

Traces from operations and other skin damage cause many problems, especially if they remain on the face or other visible places. It is quite possible to correct the situation with the help of simple external means; you just need to know which of them will actually give the desired effect.

Mepiform patch is an elastic self-adhesive bandage with silicone coating, designed to improve the appearance of scars and cicatrices, incl. hypertrophic and keloid. How does this product work and how good a result does it give? How to use it correctly? What do those who have already tried it out say in their reviews? The most important and only verified information is in the TecRussia.ru review:

↑ Information about the manufacturer

  • Mepiform is produced by the Swedish company Mölnlycke Health Care. It is engaged in the development, manufacture and sale of medical products for professional use, incl. disposable surgical products (gowns, shoe covers, masks, headgear, gloves, etc.), medical equipment, dressings and fixing materials, skin care products, etc.
  • The company's head office is located in Gothenburg, and production facilities are located in France, Belgium, Poland, Great Britain, Finland, USA, Thailand and Malaysia. Deliveries go to more than 100 countries around the world. Mölnlycke has a good reputation; there have been no significant complaints about the quality of its products in the entire history of production.

↑ What you need to know about this patch and to whom it is indicated

The active substance of Mepiform is silicone. This organic compound has been used to combat severe scarring for about half a century. Numerous studies confirm its high effectiveness in this capacity, and leading deratologists, plastic and reconstructive surgeons officially recommend it for use.

See in particular:
  • International clinical recommendations on scar management (Mustoe TA, Cooter RD, Gold MH, Hobbs FD, Ramelet AA, Shakespeare PG, Stella M, Téot L, Wood FM, Ziegler UE; 2002)
  • The Use of Silicone Adhesives for Scar Reduction (Bleasdale B, Finnegan S, Murray K, Kelly S, Percival S; 2015)

The effectiveness of the patch is based on 3 main mechanisms:

  • Constant compression - due to this, the growth of connective tissue is inhibited, sometimes it even decreases in size.
  • “Greenhouse effect” - silicone retains increased humidity in the problem area. This helps reduce scar density and also stimulates cell regeneration.
  • Physical protection - the patch covers the ripening scar from damage or irritation by clothing and frequent touching.

The silicone layer in Mepiform is made using Safetac technology, which provides the following advantages:

  • High fastening strength, due to which the patch is worn continuously for several days, incl. during water procedures. At the same time, you can remove the bandage at any time, easily and painlessly.
  • Sealed protection of the scar and surrounding tissues.
  • Minimal likelihood of developing an allergic reaction.

The most effective bandage will be when applied to fresh scars and cicatrices, therefore, as in the case of other external remedies, treatment should be started as early as possible: if six months or a year have passed since the injury, the result will be minimal.

Photos before and after 5 months of treatment with Mepiform:

↑ Instructions for use

The patch is produced in the form of rectangles of different sizes (width - from 4 to 10 cm, length - from 7.5 to 30 cm). It is very thin and is held on the skin not due to a special adhesive base, as in standard products of this type, but due to the suction effect that occurs when it comes into contact with a layer of silicone. Due to this, if necessary, it can be removed several times and then reused.

  • Stages of scar formation: at what point should treatment begin?
  • The best anti-scar creams, ointments and gels

Mepiform should be applied only when the wound is completely closed and the blood crusts covering it have fallen off (after removing the sutures, you must wait until the damage from which the threads were removed has healed). The procedure for use is very simple:

  • Determine the required size of the bandage: the length of the bandage strip should be at least 2.5 cm larger than the scar, and the width - 2 cm. If necessary, the original rectangle can be cut into several parts.
  • Rinse and dry the scar and surrounding tissue thoroughly.
  • Remove the protective film from the bandage and carefully attach it to the scar, achieving the tightest possible fit.

The time during which one plate can be worn is from three days to a week. During this period, the patch can be removed (for example, before water procedures). The main indication for replacement is poor adhesion to the skin. The recommended duration of wearing Mepiform is at least three months. For old, rough scars, treatment may take up to 2-3 years, and in both cases the bandage should be worn continuously.

Facts about the patch from patient reviews:
  • The average time of use until a visible positive result is 3-6 months.
  • The average time to wear one bandage is about 3-4 days. During this period, people took a shower, went to the pool, swam, etc. – as promised by the manufacturer, water procedures did not in any way affect the strength of the fixation. At the same time, regardless of behavior, after 3-4 days the bandage began to peel off and had to be changed.
  • After attaching it to the body, the product completely blocks the access of oxygen - this is partly what its therapeutic effect is based on, but as a result, the skin underneath it becomes dry and has to be washed every 1-2 days.
  • The surface of the patch is flesh-colored, which camouflages the scar well.
  • On large scars, it wrinkles over time and the bandage has to be changed more often than usual.
  • Can act as a local anesthetic: relieves pain and itching during keloid formation.

↑ Contraindications, complications, side effects

There are few restrictions on the use of the patch:

  • allergy to silicone base (happens extremely rarely, manifested by irritation and swelling of tissue in the area of application);
  • weeping skin damage during prolonged continuous wear;
  • fresh open wounds;
  • inflammatory processes in the area of the developing scar.

At the same time, Mepiform can be used by children, as well as pregnant and lactating women: the coating contains only pure silicone, without chemical additives, which interacts only with the top layer of tissue and does not penetrate the skin and the circulatory system of the body.

It should also be taken into account that the patch is not suitable for use on moving parts of the body, bends of limbs, etc., since here it will not last long enough. As an alternative, ointments with a similar composition (for example, Dermatix or Kelo-Kot) are usually used in such areas.

↑ How much does Mepiform cost? Current prices and analogues

The product is available in three forms, the only difference being the size. Each package contains 5 pieces.

Bandage parametersAverage price, rub.
5×7.5 cm2000 — 2300
4×30 cm4500 — 4700
10×18 cm5700 — 6000

In some stationary pharmacies, you can even buy plasters individually, but supplies and availability are inconsistent, so it would be safer to order online.

There are similar silicone dressings from other manufacturers, most of them cost a little more. For example, Sika-Kea measuring 6x12 cm will cost ~2500 rubles. There is 1 piece in a package, but it needs to be changed on average once every three weeks. Dermatix silicone patches are available in two versions: standard - on a flesh-colored fabric base and transparent - for use on the face and other open areas. The cost of a plate measuring 4x13 cm is 1,500 rubles.

↑ Conclusions TecRussia.ru: there will be improvements, but don’t expect a miracle

An analysis of numerous reviews about Mepiform allows us to conclude: the patch is effective, but you should not expect magical results from it:

  • Among the clear advantages of the product are a noticeable effect with constant use (plus a solid scientific basis for those who do not believe patient reviews alone), convenience and safety, which allows it to be applied even to small children.
  • The main disadvantages are the fairly high cost and the need to use for a long time.

Thus, Mepiform is one of the most effective external remedies for the treatment of scars. But you need to understand that a silicone plate will not help get rid of skin defects completely. After a few months of use, the scar will become softer and lighter, but will not disappear completely (especially if we are talking about a large keloid). However, in many cases this result will be quite enough for the problem to stop causing discomfort.

Review of silicone sheets for scar treatment

Scars and scars appear after damage to the skin. Deep scratches, long-term non-healing abrasions, operations - all this violates the aesthetics of the human body and makes you wonder how to get rid of the defect.

If the injury is recent and you suspect the tissue may harden over time, you can use a silicone scar patch.

This small product with a sticky side smooths out small and large scars. Pregnant women buy it to prevent and treat stretch marks.

The principle of operation of the silicone plate

A silicone patch is a gel plate designed for the resorption of burn, post-traumatic and postoperative scars. The product has the appearance of a dense rectangle or square. One of its sides is sticky.

Once applied to the scar, it comes into close contact with the rough surface. At the same time, the plate allows air to pass through well and prevents moisture from entering the damaged area. The temperature of the skin under silicone does not change. The substance helps to moisturize the scar, reduce its density and improve the elasticity of the defective area.

The use of a silicone patch to relieve scars is part of compression therapy. The sticky base effectively smoothes the scar by stretching the surface of the epidermis. The product improves skin structure and prevents collagen formation. This property stops the process of tissue scarring.

The therapeutic and prophylactic plate acts in three directions:

  • Pressure. The gel plate adheres tightly to the skin and evenly distributes pressure on the scar. As a result, the tissues are aligned, the flaw is reduced or completely disappears.
  • Nutrition. Being under the silicone layer, the scar is simply moisturized. There is no greenhouse effect created under the patch. The coarsened tissue receives liquid, which improves the course of local metabolic processes. Hydration promotes scar resorption.
  • Protection. Rough keloids and hypertrophic scars are prone to re-injury. The chance of a quick recovery when using a cream or ointment is zero. But thanks to the dense structure of the patch, the scar receives reliable protection. Regeneration processes proceed faster without the influence of external stimuli.

The appearance of a fresh scar noticeably improves after 2 to 4 months from the start of using the silicone patch. It takes longer to fight old scars - from 6 months to 2 years.

Silicone patch for scars Mepiform: prices in pharmacies and reviews

Silicone scar plates are quite popular and, judging by the instructions, easy to use.

However, their cost makes everyone think - does the price justify the quality, how much will the full course of such treatment cost? To do this, you need to carefully study the principle of action of the patches and find out if there are any contraindications. It would be a good idea to find out what reviews there are about this product.

How do patches work?

The silicone sheet, or scar patch, is a hardened gel (organopolysiloxane). In pharmacies you can find transparent plates or plates with material on one side, both forms of release are suitable for the treatment of scars.

The essence of this product is natural hydration of the problem area. The patch is glued to the scar area, which creates a so-called greenhouse effect, the skin under the patch softens. This treatment helps accelerate blood microcirculation, which benefits new and old scars. Silicone allows air to pass through, allowing the skin to breathe unhindered.

Such plates are more effective for recent scars, as well as for their prevention. In the presence of keloid scars, silicone plates protect the skin from environmental influences.

Experts note the following advantages of silicone plates:

  • moisturizing and softening the scar;
  • slows down the processes of connective tissue production.

Added to this is ease of use - the patch is easily applied to the scar area; no specialist or doctor is needed for this. At the same time, the fixation is quite high; the product does not come off when moving.

For reference! American scientists began to use silicone as a cure for scars. This material is the least allergenic and has passed all clinical tests.

Types of patches

At this stage of development of pharmaceutical products, a sufficient number of silicone wafers are available, varying in size, cost and quality. At the same time, the price does not always depend on the quality; first of all, prices rise for advertised products.

Scarfix

Long-lasting plates made in the USA. The product (1 patch) can be used repeatedly; if necessary, it can be cleaned of adhering particles. Manufacturers of Scarfix say that numerous studies are being conducted to identify any side effects. In rare cases, allergies may develop at the site where the plate is applied.
