General information about the vitamin
The official name of the component is ascorbic acid. There are 2 forms of acid:
- active L-ascorbic acid;
- inactive D-ascorbic acid.
When a substance breaks down, it turns into an inactive form. Therefore, it is important that preparations and cosmetics containing vitamin C are stored correctly.
Ascorbic acid was first isolated in 1928 by chemist Albert Szent-Gyorgyi, and already in 1933 mass production of the synthetic vitamin began. Pharmacists of that time had high hopes for ascorbic acid. Interestingly, they were associated not with the substance’s ability to support immunity, but with the antioxidant effect of the component. Therefore, ascorbic acid is included in cosmetics for aging skin.
You can compensate for the lack of vitamin C by eating as much citrus fruits or kiwi, red pepper or black currants, and other vegetables or fruits as possible. Foods rich in beneficial acids and cosmetics with vitamin C will help achieve an antioxidant effect. And you won’t get sick in the off-season!
Vitamin C for acne with antibiotic therapy
Ascorbic acid plays a supporting role in the treatment of acne, especially with tetracycline antibiotics.
Tetracycline and its analogs such as minocycline and doxycycline are often used to treat acne because they are effective against acne-causing bacteria such as P. acnes and Staphylococcus epidermis.
However, these tetracycline antibiotics have one common side effect: they make the skin photosensitive. This means that the likelihood of hyperpigmentation increases.
Tetracycline antibiotics also cause staining of the soft tissues of the skin, teeth, bones, even the thyroid gland can change its color.
Since hyperpigmentation is caused by an oxidation reaction, antioxidants such as vitamin C prevent this side effect.
This theory was supported by a study published in the Journal of Cosmetic and Restorative Dentistry in 2007, which found that ascorbic acid supplementation could prevent hyperpigmentation caused by minocycline.
How to properly get the required dose of vitamin?
Healthy food certainly contains all the substances necessary for the human body. But there are two problems.
First , the vitamin C content is too low to provide maximum benefit in treating acne. Goats synthesize 100,000 mg per day when stressed. It is estimated that prehistoric people ate up to 1,000 mg per day on a tropical diet rich in fruit.
Second , vitamin C levels in fruits and vegetables have fallen sharply since the mid-20th century. An analysis by the Kushi Institute found that in 12 different vegetables, the average level of vitamin C dropped by 30% between 1975 and 1997.
Cauliflower was found to contain 40% less vitamin C than in 1975. Onions lost 36%, cabbage 31.9% and watercress 45.6%.
How can a normal person get enough to treat acne?
Now they sell a bunch of nutritional supplements, for example, camu camu. One teaspoon or about 5 grams contains more than 600 mg (more than 1000% of the recommended daily dose).
In addition, it is natural vitamin C, which preserves all the enzymes necessary for absorption in the digestive system. Camu camu powder also contains other nutrients: the amino acids valine, serine and leucine and the antioxidants gallic and ellagic acid.
Or the same ascorbic acid will come to your aid, although you shouldn’t get too carried away with it.
Pure ascorbic acid (vitamin C) powder is an excellent strategy for preventing acne and improving overall skin tone.
Large doses of 1000 mg can be considered safe as any excess vitamin C is excreted through urine. Allan Smith was given 50,000 mg a day and recovered from swine flu.
But remember that the studies that show side effects such as headaches, nausea and vomiting used a synthetic ascorbic acid supplement, not natural vitamin C.
Before conducting any experiments with your body, you should consult your doctor.
Cosmetological properties
Ascorbic acid is an antioxidant. But what exactly does it give? The list of beneficial effects is impressive:
- reduces the effects of free radicals;
- protects against the harmful effects of sunlight;
- slows down the aging of the body;
- makes the skin more elastic;
- evens out complexion;
- reduces the number of wrinkles and their depth;
- eliminates age spots;
- helps fight acne more effectively;
- moisturizes the skin in all layers;
- normalizes pH;
- improves immunity (including local);
- stimulates collagen production;
- gives shine.
The beneficial effect of ascorbic acid is directly related to the effect of free radicals on the body. This is the name given to unstable oxygen atoms that need to be stabilized. To do this, they react with the cells of the body, causing them harm. The first to suffer is the genetic material. New cells inherit the “breakage”, so serious disruptions can occur in the body. This applies to the skin, other organs and systems.
That's when antioxidants come into play. These substances transfer the electrons needed to stabilize free radicals so that harmful oxidation does not occur. But even antioxidants are not a panacea. The use of vitamin creams will not smooth out the skin completely, but will help slow down the natural aging of the epidermis, so antioxidant cosmetics should not be written off.
The beneficial effects of vitamin C on hair and nails are due to the fact that ascorbic acid improves the process of keratin production. And due to the good moisturizing abilities of the vitamin, hair follicles receive more nutrition, so hair grows faster.
A beauty blogger expresses her opinion on the use of ascorbic acid in face and body care in the video:
Benefits of ascorbic acid
Every day a person should consume a daily dose of vitamin C, then problems with health and beauty will not arise. But today, cosmetologists recommend taking ascorbic acid for external use to care for the skin of the face, especially for women in adulthood: after 40 years (by the way, we also recommend making effective face masks after 40 years).
So, let’s look at the effect this vitamin will have if you add it to various care products:
- the skin becomes elastic, the protective function is restored, and all this thanks to the production of collagen;
- removes all toxic compounds (free radicals), thereby preventing skin withering;
- has a protective effect against ultraviolet rays;
- regeneration and renewal of skin cells improves;
- removes small pigment spots and makes large ones lighter;
- normalizes complexion;
- has cleansing and toning effects.
For normal functioning of the body, a person needs to take about 500 mg of ascorbic acid per day. It is better if it is a natural replenishment with the help of fresh products: kiwi, strawberries, rose hips, sea buckthorn, lemon, orange, tangerine, bell pepper.
Indications and contraindications
Be sure to try vitamin C care products if you have wrinkles, poor complexion, hyperpigmentation, acne or other imperfections. Vitamin creams and serums can be used for all skin types, but the vitamin works best in anti-aging care.
Despite all the benefits of ascorbic acid, fortified cosmetics have contraindications:
- It is not recommended for use by girls with very sensitive skin to avoid irritation and itching;
- Those who spend a lot of time under the sun should not buy daytime cosmetics with ascorbic acid.
A special study was conducted, the results of which are surprising. If you apply a product with vitamin C to your face and immediately go out into the sun, there will be no antioxidant effect. On the contrary, palmitates, formed from ascorbic acid, accelerate the formation of free radicals.
Therefore, residents of hot, sunny regions should definitely use products with SPF filters or apply serums or creams in the evenings.
Mask recipes
There are many recipes for vitamin C masks that are easy to make at home.
For wrinkles
Ingredients:
- banana - 1 pc.;
- sour cream - 1 tbsp. l.;
- granulated sugar - 0.5 tsp;
- cocoa powder (not instant, but natural) - 0.5 tsp;
- 10% ascorbic acid solution - 1 ampoule.
Mash the banana thoroughly and mix it with sour cream, cocoa and sugar, let stand for 15 minutes and pour the solution into the mixture. The ampoule cannot be opened in advance. This is done before the infusion. Mix the mixture well again and apply to your face as a mask. After 15 minutes, rinse with water at a comfortable temperature.
The mask tones the skin, smoothes wrinkles, and prevents aging.
For acne
Ingredients:
- green cosmetic clay - 1 tbsp. l.;
- pink cosmetic clay - 1 tbsp. l.;
- low-fat kefir - 2 tbsp. l.;
- some mineral water;
- granulated sugar - 10 g;
- 10% vitamin C – 1 ampoule.
You should mix green and pink clay, add a little mineral water to get a mass with a consistency reminiscent of rich sour cream. Add kefir, sugar and mix. Let stand for 5 minutes and pour ascorbic acid into the mixture. Quickly mix the mixture and apply to the face. Wait 10 minutes and rinse with water.
Regular use of the mask leads to a reduction in inflammation and acne.
For pigment spots
Ingredients:
- low-fat cottage cheese - 0.5 tbsp. l.;
- black tea infusion - 1 tbsp. l.;
- ascorbic acid solution - 0.5 tsp;
- sea buckthorn oil - 0.5 tsp.
You should combine all the ingredients together, beat using a blender, and apply to areas with age spots. Wait 20 minutes and rinse with water.
As a result of regular use of the mask, the skin brightens and age spots become less visible.
Around eyes
Ingredients:
- 10% ascorbic acid solution - 1 ampoule;
- natural yogurt without added sugar - 1 tbsp. l.;
- granulated sugar - 3 tsp;
- neroli oil - 2 drops.
Mix yogurt with sugar and let the mixture brew for 15 minutes. The sugar should be completely dissolved in the yogurt. Add oil, pour in ascorbic acid and mix. Apply to a cotton sponge, which is applied under the eyes. For convenience, the sponge is pre-cut into 2 semicircles.
Composition of vitamin cosmetics
There are several types of ascorbic acid that are used to produce cosmetic products. Modified forms of the vitamin can achieve special effects, so be sure to check the ingredients before purchasing.
The following types of vitamin C are usually used in cosmetology:
- Sodium ascorbyl phosphate (SAP). The most common inexpensive form of the vitamin. But the problem is that SAP does not turn into ascorbic acid, so there is little sense in using such a component. Don't expect whitening of age spots, evening out complexion, reducing wrinkles, or improving collagen synthesis. This is just good hydration and nutrition.
- Magnesium ascorbyl phosphate (MAP). When it comes into contact with the skin surface, the substance is converted into ascorbic acid and is quickly absorbed, affecting all layers. Helps fight hyperpigmentation and insufficient collagen production, but products with MAP do not protect well from ultraviolet radiation.
- Ascorbyl palmitate. This form does not penetrate the skin very well, and is also quickly destroyed under the influence of external factors. But ascorbyl palmitate evens out complexion, removes age spots, and normalizes collagen synthesis.
- Ascorbyl tetra isopalmitate. Active form of the vitamin. Converts into ascorbic acid, absorbs well, whitens, evens out complexion.
- Ascorbyl 2-phosphate 6-palmitate. It has the same properties as ascorbyl tetra isopalmitate.
- 3-O-ethyl ascorbate. Effective only in eliminating hyperpigmentation.
All listed components are ranked by popularity. The cost of a cosmetic product directly depends on the type of vitamin. MAP and ascorbyl palmitate are the best options, but some skin types respond better to other forms of vitamin C.
Before you buy the first fortified cosmetics you come across, pay attention to important nuances:
- Concentration. Scientific research confirms that even very small amounts of the vitamin work well. But creams and serums with 20% of the active substance are considered effective. No more is needed, otherwise there will be irritation. For girls with sensitive epidermis, it is better to stop at 10–15%.
- pH. This point is important because ascorbic acid is an acid. It is necessary that the cosmetic product has a pH of 2.8–3.4. If it is higher, the vitamin will be destroyed, and if it is less, the cream will cause allergies.
- Stabilizers. Vitamin C is unstable and quickly degrades; the serum will be of no use if it has the wrong composition or was stored in poor conditions. To avoid this, vitamin E or ferulic acid is added to the composition.
Considering the instability of ascorbic acid, it is not surprising that good products with the vitamin are not cheap. But it is better to buy a good serum to get the desired result than to apply an inexpensive one that has no effect.
Properties of Vitamin C
Let's start with the fact that vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that blocks the action of free radicals that trigger oxidation and aging processes. In addition, the component regulates and stimulates the independent production of collagen, so that your skin is guaranteed elasticity and smoothness.
And also:
- protects the walls of blood vessels and reduces their fragility;
- evens out tone and improves complexion;
- protects against ultraviolet radiation;
- strengthens the immune system;
- regulates pH balance;
- perfectly moisturizes;
- lightens acne marks and age spots;
- improves skin structure;
- refreshes and creates a natural glow effect.
Cosmetics release forms
Manufacturers produce many different products with ascorbic acid:
- creams;
- gels;
- serums;
- masks;
- tonics;
- sprays;
- lotions.
It is difficult to say which option is the most effective. The listed products are used at different stages of care. It is ideal if you use vitaminized cosmetics from the same line.
The standard care regimen begins with washing. Afterwards, you need to wipe your face with tonic or lotion, then apply serum. Depending on the type or specific needs of the epidermis, you can use a cream or gel after the serum. A vitamin spray is used to moisturize throughout the day, and masks provide vitamins and other beneficial substances. You can use masks 1-2 times a week.
About packaging
We have already mentioned above the instability of vitamin C. It is easily destroyed under the influence of sunlight or other external factors. If you see a serum or cream with ascorbic acid in a transparent bottle, you should not buy this product. The vitamin has long since disappeared from there.
Choose cosmetics in opaque jars or bottles made of tinted glass. If you buy a spray, look for an option with a special airless sprayer. Fortified products are the very case when packaging is very important. Be sure to pay attention to it, otherwise buy a pacifier.
Face Serums
This type of cosmetics has become particularly popular lately. A good serum improves the effect of the cream, helps slow down the evaporation of fluid from the skin layers, and nourishes the epidermis with useful substances.

Vitamin C enhances collagen production
Vitamin C itself for acne is not a panacea, because it affects skin cleansing indirectly, improving its overall condition by increasing collagen levels.
Collagen is the main structural protein in the skin; it provides the structure of all important proteins and tissues.
30% of the total protein in the human body is collagen. It prevents the formation of wrinkles, enhances skin hydration and does wonders for skin tone and radiance.
These days, collagen is depleted very quickly. Cigarette smoke, air pollution and chemicals in cosmetics, which can also be a hidden cause of acne, easily destroy collagen and render it useless.
Sunlight does the same to your skin, especially if you're lacking natural sunscreen vitamins for acne like vitamin A and E.
Collagen is formed in the body from the amino acids glycine and proline into procollagen, a precursor to collagen. Then the collagen itself is created. It consists of triads of amino acids, of which glycine, proline and lysine are necessarily present.
Without vitamin C, these amino acids cannot function. Its deficiency leads to the formation of defective collagen, as a result of which the skin becomes weaker and acne appears.
Scurvy plagued sailors throughout the British Empire for hundreds of years. When it turned out that this was a simple deficiency of vitamin C, all captains of long sea voyages always brought with them a box of citrus fruits.
Scurvy begins with weakness, followed by bleeding gums and unsightly spots on the arms. Without proper treatment, scurvy ends in death due to weakening and fragility of the blood vessels.
What do these symptoms have in common? All of them are caused by weakening of structural tissues due to deterioration in collagen production due to a lack of vitamin C.
Of course, no one has canceled the effect of acne. The skin will not fall apart, but it will become weaker against many threats and generally less attractive.
The formation of a normal collagen matrix in the epidermis is the first step in wound healing, so collagen also helps heal marks from old acne.

Vitamin C in cosmetics and cosmetology
Average rating: Number of reviews: 0
Ascorbic acid is a capricious component. But when used correctly, it can work wonders. Girls in reviews of fortified cosmetics wrote that it eliminates hyperpigmentation, evens out complexion and makes the skin soft. Thanks to the ability of ascorbic acid to improve collagen synthesis, the epidermis becomes denser and more elastic, fine wrinkles disappear, and the skin fades more slowly. Therefore, vitamin C is included in many anti-aging products.
But there are also disadvantages. A high concentration of vitamin C in cosmetic products increases the skin's sensitivity to sunlight, so you must use products with SPF filters.
Another possible disadvantage of fortified cosmetics was mentioned by those with sensitive skin. In girls with such epidermis, ascorbic acid can cause irritation. We recommend starting with products with a small concentration of vitamin C to test the reaction.
How it is done
How is facial injection mesotherapy done? The skin must be cleaned before the procedure; alcohol is usually used for this. This is a necessary condition to avoid infection and inflammation.
A cream with an anesthetic effect is applied to the problem area. It affects a depth of up to 5 mm. When the remedy begins to act, the specialist begins direct action.
On average, the entire process will take about 30 minutes, during which time up to a dozen manual injections will be performed, which is why it is necessary that the procedure be performed by an experienced cosmetologist. The needle in the syringe must be special, very thin and strong, in order to successfully administer the mesococktail and prevent unexpected complications.
Cocktails for mesotherapy are described here.

The procedure is not particularly complex and is considered safe, since a classical technology has been developed, which specialists adhere to.
Positive results appear within a day, but for the full positive effect you will need 3-5 sessions, taking a break of 7 to 10 days. This must be done, because mesotherapy is based on creating a cumulative effect that will last six months or more.
There are no negative aspects observed after mesotherapy, so you can immediately fully immerse yourself in an active daily routine. No special rehabilitation measures will be required: life should go on as before.
The only caution is not to take hot baths at first, avoid visiting saunas, steam baths, beaches, protect your face from bright rays, hide it on frosty days and do not wash your face with hot water either. If suddenly inflammatory processes begin to appear on the skin, the skin needs to be treated with an antiseptic, but it is better to seek help from a specialist. Even the best things, unfortunately, also have negative aspects. For some, such a positive procedure can cause negative manifestations if the body, for some reason, protests against violent interference in its work.

Usually, if unpleasant effects occur, they quickly disappear. Such troubles include:
- Minor pain . They can occur both during the procedure and some time after it.
- Swelling, redness and itching . This is a manifestation of the body to a violation of the integrity of the skin, as well as a reaction to the drug.
- The appearance of papules and bruises.
If such manifestations last for 2-3 days, then this is a completely normal reaction, but if they do not go away for a long time, you need to contact a specialist to find out the reasons and urgently correct them.
