Let us recall that acne is caused by a number of factors, including: 1) increased activity of the sebaceous glands, accompanied by an increase in sebum production, 2) hyperkeratosis of the epithelium of the hair follicles, leading to blockage of their lumen, 3) colonization of the follicles by Propionibacterium acnes bacteria, 4) inflammation follicles and dermis. In addition, in adolescence, these processes are influenced by an increase in the concentration of androgens circulating in the blood, which can also increase the activity of the sebaceous glands.

An interesting effect of botulinum toxins is that they can inhibit the cascade of these processes in patients with acne. The effect of botulinum toxin in this case develops through different mechanisms. Well, the last point - we have already said above that the androgenic hormonal background can greatly influence the development of follicular occlusion (i.e. when the lumen of the hair follicles is blocked by the secretion of the sebaceous glands and desquamated epithelial cells). This is due to the fact that androgen receptors are present on keratinocytes along the ducts of the sebaceous glands, and botulinum toxin has an antiandrogenic effect, reducing the number of such receptors.
