What is each drug? Similarities and differences
The active ingredient in both Botox and Dysport is botulinum toxin. The principle of its operation is to block the transmission of nerve impulses to muscles, resulting in paralysis of the latter. But the poison content in both drugs is so insignificant that it works strictly locally, freezing the muscles only at the injection site. And the products differ in the proportions of the active ingredient and auxiliary components.
Botox contains:
- 5 ng botulinum toxin type A (active ingredient).
Auxiliary components:
- 500,000 ng human plasma albumin;
- 900,000 ng sodium chloride.
As part of Dysport:
- 12.5 ng botulinum toxin type A (active ingredient).
Auxiliary components:
- 2,500,000 ng lactose;
- 125,000 ng human albumin.

Storage conditions
Vials of Botox and Dysport can be stored at a temperature of 2-8 degrees Celsius. The French toxin cannot be frozen, but the American one can be kept at a temperature of -5 degrees Celsius or lower. Although the requirements differ in different countries, for example, in the USA, Botox bottles are stored only at above-zero temperatures.
The shelf life of the funds is 2 years, but in America other rules apply to Dysport - it can only be stored for 12 months if all conditions are met. Xeomin has other requirements. It can be stored at room temperature up to 25 degrees Celsius. The period of activity of the drug has been increased to 3 years.
Because of this, it is necessary to ensure that the cosmetologist dilutes the drug before starting the session. It cannot be stored in collected syringes, even in the refrigerator - there will be no result after such a procedure.
Origin of drugs and their manufacturers
In cosmetology, botulinum toxin was first tried to be used back in the 50s, after research revealed the property of the poison to cause local muscle paralysis. However, botulinum toxin is used not only in cosmetology: since the 90s, it has been used to stop excessive sweating (regurgitation) in the armpits, palms and feet, and to treat central paralysis.
The name “Botox” appeared in 1989, when the American pharmaceutical company Allergan acquired the right to produce a drug based on botulinum toxin.
The drug has been certified in the Russian Federation since 1995
Initially, Botox was not developed to combat wrinkles, but to treat strabismus, to relieve spasms of the muscles of the eyeball.
After the publication of the results of clinical studies by Canadian ophthalmologist Jeanne Carruthers, Botox was doomed to incredible commercial success. The doctor was surprised to discover that after botulinum toxin injections in her patients suffering from blepharospasm, the so-called crow's feet - facial wrinkles in the corners of the eyes - disappeared. She couldn’t help but share this observation with her husband, a dermatologist and plastic surgeon. Further studies confirmed the side effect of botulinum toxin to significantly reduce the severity of wrinkles.
At the beginning of the 2000s, the European drug Dysport, created by the French company Ipsen, began to be used for cosmetic purposes. To be fair, we note that this product was originally developed to combat more serious problems than wrinkles.
The main indications for the use of Dysport are blepharospasm, foot deformity due to cerebral palsy, migraine, torticollis caused by spasms, neurogenic bladder overactivity and some others.
In Russia, Dysport has been approved for use since 2004.
What are the features of Xeomin?
This is a muscle relaxant, which is available in the form of a lyophilisate. Its main component is botulinum toxin type A. This drug allows you to block nerve impulses that are directed to a group of facial muscles. Muscle tissue stops contracting, which leads to the disappearance of wrinkles.
Also, this drug helps get rid of the fine mesh of wrinkles around the eyes. In addition, the medication is injected into the area of the nose, nasolabial fold, and around the lips if fine wrinkles occur when wrinkled. Injections have a smoothing effect when correcting the décolleté and neck area.
Indications for use:
- hemifacial spasm;
- blepharospasm;
- spastic torticollis;
- local muscle spasm (including spasticity and cerebral palsy);
- paralytic strabismus.
Contraindications include:
- inflammation at the injection site;
- myasthenic and myasthenic syndromes (including Lambert-Eaton);
- myasthenia gravis;
- pregnancy;
- breast-feeding;
- excessive sensitivity to the components of the drug.
While taking the drug, the following adverse reactions of the body may develop:
- ptosis, dry eyes, muscle weakness, headache, rash;
- blurred vision, entropion of the eyelid, weakness of the facial muscles;
- dry mouth, conjunctivitis, paresthesia, keratitis, lacrimation;
- dermatitis, fatigue, photophobia, irritation, lagophthalmos;
- dizziness, ectopia of the eye, blurred vision, facial paralysis;
- diplopia, dysphagia, asthenia, back pain;
- speech impairment, fever, nausea, general malaise, shortness of breath;
- rhinitis, increased blood pressure, dizziness.
While taking Xeomin, the following may develop: ptosis, dry eyes, muscle weakness, headache, rash.
In case of overdose, severe muscle paralysis develops. The patient must be hospitalized and undergo supportive measures. When the respiratory muscles are paralyzed, mechanical ventilation and intubation are required until the patient's condition returns to normal.
When choosing between these drugs, you need to compare them.
Similarities
Both drugs are muscle relaxants; designed to do facial treatments. They have the same active component (botulinum toxin type A), which can penetrate the central nervous system and, at the injection site, block the mobility of small facial muscles.
What is the difference?
Botox differs from Xeomin in that it is a purified neurotoxic complex, and the second drug is a neurotoxin in its pure form. Xeomin contains no foreign protein, so it is less likely to cause allergic reactions, has fewer side effects, and minimizes the risk of immune system rejection. This medication is undemanding to storage conditions, while Botox is more finicky in this regard.
Xeomin, unlike Botox, is not intended to treat excessive sweating. The drug does not move well into neighboring tissues, so it will be ineffective. Xeomin injections are given more often, and the therapeutic effect lasts 2 months less.
Which is cheaper?
The cost of Xeomin is 8,300 rubles, Botox is 13,200 rubles.
Xeomin is an analogue of Botox. Both products help get rid of facial wrinkles. However, the first drug is recommended for use by women whose wrinkles have just begun to appear. It is used from the age of 25, at this age the skin begins to lose firmness and elasticity. This medication smoothes the muscles on the face, chest, and neck.
Botox is most often used to get rid of wrinkles on the neck, chin, around the lips, to cope with drooping lower eyelids and facial asymmetry. The drug eliminates deep wrinkles well, and is often used by mature women.
For hyperhidrosis
For excessive sweating, Botox is prescribed; Xeomin will not help in this case.
Svetlana, 41 years old, cosmetologist, Ryazan: “I have been working as a cosmetologist for more than 10 years and have been using the drug Xeomin all this time. It has a gentle effect on the skin and causes fewer complications than Botox. The medication does not contain hemagglutinin, does not lead to the formation of antibodies and does not cause immunoresistance or addiction.”
Elena, 49 years old, cosmetologist, Samara: “In my practice I only use Botox. My patients have never complained about this drug. It extremely rarely leads to the development of side effects, and the result always lives up to expectations.”
Xeomin is devoid of protein content due to thorough purification using modern technologies. This helps reduce negative reviews from users and makes the drug as safe as possible for use in cosmetology and medicine. The drug is sold in bottles of 50 and 100 units.
The introduction of the drug through an injection into the area of the muscles that form facial wrinkles leads to blocking of the neural connection of the nerve endings with the fibers of the muscle tissue, causing its immobilization. Relaxing the muscles helps smooth out wrinkles and prevent the appearance of new ones.
Xeomin retains its properties during prolonged exposure to a room with temperatures up to 250C, which cannot be said about its brother, which loses effectiveness at 80C. When buying a drug, you cannot be sure that transportation took place properly, and when using a product that was stored incorrectly, you get no results.
Side effects
Botox contains a protein that is foreign to the human body. Under the influence of protein, negative reactions and allergies appear. In the new generation toxin, protein inclusions are excluded, which helps to avoid side effects.
When the solution is introduced into the body, the immune system begins to produce antibodies to the protein component. It is absent in Xeomin, which eliminates the formation of antibodies and a decrease in effectiveness in the future.
The more modern Xeomin has a well-thought-out molecular structure. Toxin particles are reduced, and their attraction properties to the muscle are enhanced. This structure does not allow the drug to penetrate into the area of untreated tissue, reducing the risk of drooping eyelids or stretching of other muscles.
Dosing
Improved structure helped reduce the amount of injection composition due to the “non-spread” quality of the solution.
The drug, like any medicinal substance, has a number of contraindications for use, which must be taken into account when planning botulinum therapy.
- If you have a medical record about myasthenia gravis or muscle weakness, you will have to stop using the solution.
- Infectious diseases pose a barrier to injection.
- For oncological, chronic and acute diseases, postpone going to the beauty salon until you have fully recovered.
- Check the drug for an allergic reaction.
- Pregnancy and lactation are a contraindication to anti-aging injections.
For health problems of other forms not described above, consultation with your doctor is necessary.
The effect of botulinum therapy appears within three days after the session, the final result can be observed after 10-14 days. A second visit to the cosmetologist for injection purposes is possible after 4 months. The injection points and amount of the product are selected individually in each specific case. Selection parameters depend on:
- Severity of the problem;
- Areas of use;
- Conditions of the skin;
- Facial asymmetry;
- Mimic features.
The injection is almost painless, but if you are in doubt, the cosmetologist, upon request, will treat the area with anesthetic cream.
Before deciding on a rejuvenation procedure, women wonder which injections are better - Botox, Xeomin or Dysport?
In fact, the effects of these drugs are very similar. The main active ingredient in them is botulinum toxin, which began to be actively used in cosmetology in the nineties of the last century. It is a strong poison and, when ingested through food, causes a toxic disease such as botulism.
Since 1995, botulinum toxin has been used in cosmetology to smooth out facial wrinkles that cosmetic products cannot cope with.
Although the effects of these drugs are similar, they still have differences. As for the Xeomin injection, the difference from Botox is the following nuances:
- Compared to Botox, Xeomin is not as demanding to store. There is no need to keep it cold. The product can be stored at room temperature.
- An allergic reaction in patients to Xeomin is extremely rare.
- Patients' dependence on Botox has been repeatedly observed, but Xeomin is not addictive.
- A dose of Xeomin for a rejuvenation injection is needed less than Botox.
- Botox copes better with excessive sweating.
- The result lasts almost twice as long after Botox injections.
- Botox has been used in cosmetology for more than twenty years. Xeomin is a new drug, so it has been less studied.
Botox, Dysport or Xeomin - which is better to inject? As for Botox, it is suitable for patients with severe facial asymmetry. It is also recommended for those with wrinkles on the neck. This medication can also treat wrinkles near the corners of the mouth and lips. It is also prescribed to patients in case of drooping upper eyelid.
Dysport is used in cases of increased muscle tone after a stroke. It is also effective for blepharospasm, that is, with symmetrical contraction of muscles in the area of women's eyes. In addition, dysport is used in case of wrinkles on the forehead and near the eyebrows. It can also cope with deep wrinkles.
Xeomin is recommended for patients predisposed to the appearance of horizontal folds in the forehead. Such injections are also prescribed for those who have wrinkles on the face or in the eyebrow area. It is also recommended for nasolabial folds.
What to choose?
Differing in the dosage of the active substance, Botox and Dysport injections have different effects. Having visited many forums about beauty and studied the reviews of women who have tried these drugs, we can draw a number of conclusions. For clarity, the results are presented in table form.
Table: comparative characteristics of the effects of Botox and Dysport
Effect of the drug | Botox | Dysport |
Onset of visible effect | for 4–7 days | for 2–3 days |
Duration of action | up to 13 weeks | up to 8 weeks |
Safety | safe | safe |
Portability | good, suitable for almost everyone | the injection is “softer”, easier to tolerate, suitable for beginners |
Accumulation effect | Yes | Yes |
Diffusion with surrounding tissues | acts more accurately, locally | penetrates more easily into surrounding tissues |
When to use | for small areas: areas around the eyes (“crow’s feet”) or lips | for deeper wrinkles, creases, for larger areas: forehead, neck |
Since the dosage of botulinum toxin is higher in Dysport, it acts faster. That is why this particular drug is suitable when you urgently need to get yourself in order before some important event.
Another advantage of Dysport is its lower cost (10–15 percent) compared to Botox.
But in terms of duration of action, Dysport is inferior to Botox. You will have to visit a cosmetologist for correction more often, so when choosing a drug you should not focus only on its cost - the savings can be very dubious. However, according to reviews from cosmetologists, the duration of action of the drugs is individual. The frequency of repeated procedures depends on the characteristics of the body.
Women who lead an active lifestyle, undergo serious physical activity, and often visit the sauna or swimming pool, unfortunately, will not be able to enjoy a flawlessly smooth face for long - the higher the metabolism, the shorter the duration of action of botulinum toxin.
Both drugs have an accumulation effect. This means that no matter what remedy you choose, repeat procedures will be required less and less over time.
The safety and good tolerability of both Botox and Dysport have been proven over time. But due to the fact that Botox has less diffusion (that is, the ability to penetrate into surrounding tissues), the risk of developing deformation of the facial nerve is significantly lower. However, this is rather a question of the professionalism of the doctor himself.

Summing up
According to reviews from most patients, Botox still provides the most lasting and predictable results. When choosing between its analogues: “Xeomin” or “Dysport”, you should listen to the opinion of experts. In terms of price, the procedures will be almost the same, but the latter is more effective for hyperhidrosis, and the former is better at removing crow’s feet. Cosmetologists still prefer to inject Botox into the forehead and between the eyebrows and deep nasolabial folds.
Understanding the difference between Botox and Xeomin, experienced cosmetologists prefer to have both drugs in their arsenal. True, you cannot mix them in one session. But sometimes, to achieve greater efficiency, the correction is divided into two procedures. Xeomin is injected into some areas, and Botox is injected into others after about 3-4 weeks.
Despite the fact that Botox analogues are easy to buy on the Internet today, and information about their use is in the public domain, using these drugs on your own is strictly not recommended. Those who have such a thought should look at the unsuccessful photos with serious complications caused by unprofessional use of the drug.
Contraindications and possible side effects
Clear contraindications to botulinum therapy apply to both drugs:
- pregnancy;
- lactation;
- generalized movement disorders;
- blood clotting disorder;
- any inflammatory processes in the body;
- chronic diseases in the acute stage.
But the unwanted side effects of Botox and Dysport may be different.

So, Dysport will be more effective in combating deep wrinkles in the forehead and neck area. Botox will give better results for crow's feet. Both drugs are safe, but only in the hands of an experienced and skilled doctor.
Manipulations with Dysport in the neck area can only be performed by the most highly qualified practitioners. Otherwise, the risk of blocking the respiratory muscle is too great if the injection site is chosen incorrectly.
Botox injections - application in cosmetology
Dysport injection is one of the most popular procedures. It is used to eliminate facial wrinkles and also helps fight neurological diseases. After the session, tense muscles relax, resulting in wrinkles smoothing out.
The dose of Dysport is prescribed individually for each patient; it is determined by multiple factors, such as the number and depth of wrinkles, their location.
During the procedure, ultra-thin needles are used, so the injections are practically unnoticeable and damage is kept to a minimum. The session lasts ten to thirty minutes. After it there is no need to carry out restorative procedures.
A minor disadvantage of this product is that the result after the session is not noticeable immediately, but only after a few weeks.
The effect of Dysport injection lasts about four months.
As a result of these manipulations, complications may occur. The most common among them is ptosis. The main symptom of this eye pathology is the progression of drooping of the upper eyelids. A similar complication such as half-closed eyes is also possible. At the same time, the face has a sleepy expression, and the head is thrown back.
Most often, ptosis occurs as a result of the muscles that raise the upper eyelid becoming immobilized. Such a complication may arise if the patient does not follow the doctor’s recommendations and gives herself excessive loads: lifts weights, bends over a lot.
Swelling may also appear. They arise as a result of the accumulation of fluid in the subcutaneous space. Edema most often manifests itself in the form of swelling. Swelling occurs both on the upper eyelids and on the forehead or around the eyes.
It is not uncommon for bumps to appear after injections. They do not require treatment and go away on their own within 14 days.
If the dosage of the active substance is exceeded, after a Botox injection is made, a complication such as an allergy appears. It goes away on its own within a few hours.
The cost of units of the anti-aging product varies, the cheapest is Dysport, but due to the increased amount of substance for injection, you will not be able to save money. Xeomin is slightly more expensive, but is safe due to its purified composition. It is much more difficult to find Dysport or Xeomin in the price list of salons than Botox, because it is common, and at the same time its cost is the highest.
What is better for a rejuvenation session, Botox, Dysport or Xeomin, is up to you to choose, depending on preferences, cost and availability in cosmetology salons. All drugs have a common active ingredient and differ in their effects and how long the results last.

Expert opinion on Botox and Dysport
There are several types of botulinum toxin type A, but there are no significant differences between them. The choice of doctors depends mainly on who is used to working with what. I choose a drug based on the individual characteristics of each patient... Dysport is harsher, and Xeomin is softer... Botox is more universal, it suits almost always and everyone.

The effectiveness of using botulinum neurotoxin depends on many factors, including the injection technique (volume of the injected drug, dosage, post-injection massage), the molecular characteristics of the neurotoxin complex (protein load), as well as the characteristics of the muscle being treated. The doctor must take all this into account... So, different commercial drugs differ from each other in addition to the fillers in the size of the neuropeptide complex itself. This is an important point, since molecular weight can be one of the factors limiting the diffusion of the toxin from the injection site... But this does not mean that one drug is better, another worse. The only thing that can be worse or better is the doctor, his education, professionalism, work experience, and responsibility. Knowledge of the specifics of administering a particular drug must be supported by a doctor with an appropriate certificate (nowadays every selling company provides training in working with its drugs). And only a doctor who knows the intricacies of working with a particular drug can determine which drug to choose and use for a particular patient.

Reviews from those who have experienced it
Botox injections are an excellent tool for preventing expression lines. Hello! I first thought about Botox at the age of 23. I began to notice strong depressions between my eyebrows when I started squinting my eyes from the sun or getting very indignant))) It took a long time for the lines to smooth out. This greatly spoiled my young face. So I went for a consultation with a cosmetologist. Important: Skin must be clean, without makeup. She advised me 10 units. (this is how the dose of Botox is measured). Before the injection, they put a cap on me and wiped my forehead, after which they applied “freeze”. Of course, you can feel the needle, but there is no severe pain. After the procedure, we were told about the restrictions that must be observed for seven days. The effect does not appear immediately, for me it takes a week, maybe a little more. The results last for about a year. And during the second year, you manage to frown, but the wrinkle quickly smoothes out. I did this procedure three times, at 23, 25 and 28 years old. This procedure cannot be called useful, but it is effective.

Before the procedure, facial wrinkles between the eyebrows are noticeable
Wrinkles between the eyebrows are almost invisible
Dysport, botulinum toxin complex type A-hemagglutenin - I expected more from it... I’ll say right away that the procedure is not pleasant, it even hurts a little, especially on the wings of the nose, but it’s tolerable, a woman in general, it seems to me, can easily endure any pain, especially when it concerns her appearance. I didn’t feel any sensations after administering the drug; they warn that sometimes you may feel dizzy, so it is not recommended to give injections on an empty stomach, but everything went fine for me. Immediately after the injection, a slight redness appeared in their places, but after an hour it was no longer there, only small dots remained. After the procedure, there are a number of restrictions: you cannot take a horizontal position for 4 hours, bend your head down, do not drink alcohol for the next two weeks, actively play sports, do not take antibiotics, do not visit the bathhouse, sauna and solarium - all this can lead to a decrease in the effect of the drug. The effect usually occurs within 2–7 days, and its maximum is achieved after two weeks. It should be so, I’ll tell you how it was for me. Neither on the second nor on the seventh day I practically saw no difference from what was before all the manipulations and periodically blew my mind at the cosmetologist, but she reassured me that the final result should be assessed after 14 days, but I still understood that something was going wrong with me. The eyes and the area between the eyebrows behaved in all directions, and the forehead shook, forming the same crease that I hated, which simply did not want to be smoothed out. After 12 days. It can be seen that the area between the eyebrows has more or less risen, but the forehead is still wrinkled and decently. Two weeks later I came to her again, she examined me and agreed that the forehead needed more units and we added 8 more, just in the area of this very folds. She made the last injections using the mesobotox technique, affecting only the superficial layers, explaining that she could not turn off this muscle completely, as this would result in the eyebrows falling into the eyes. Agree, who wants to be like Viy, in the “lift my eyelids” style, so I didn’t want to. But oddly enough, these additional units brought results. The forehead began to wrinkle much less, although the crease still remained, but it became much paler and I still hope that over time it will smooth out as much as possible. Here's a comparison of how the muscles worked before the injections and how they work now.
