Continuing the theme of 3D facial modeling using thread lifting, our magazine decided to introduce readers to how the process of producing self-absorbable threads occurs and accepted an invitation to visit the PromoItalia factory, specializing in the production of caprolactone threads under the Dermafil Happy Lift brand.

The president of PromoItalia and its owner, Valerio Matano, is an economist by training, as well as an observant and proactive person. After university, he worked in a small company that sold cosmetics. Communicating with clients - cosmetologists, Valerio Matano saw that they needed something more effective than creams, lotions and other products for facial care programs.

He began to implement his plans with the founding of his own company, PromoItalia, in 1993, which for the first years supplied French professional cosmetics to the Italian market. Quickly realizing that it was much more profitable and strategically correct to build his own factories, Signor Matano began to implement this project. As a result, in 2000, PromoItalia began producing products under its own brand: the Proellixe vibration platform for gyms and the then unique Botoskin cream for skin rejuvenation without injections.

While still working as a distributor, Valerio Matano came to the conclusion: to be a leader, you need to constantly offer the market new products and train them to work with them. As mentioned above, some time ago the interest of scientists from the PromoItalia laboratory was attracted by caprolactone, a self-absorbing suture material used by surgeons during operations. In fact, threads for lifting began to be made from it at one of the factories of the PromoItalia company. However, it turned out that every coin, as they say, has two sides: caprolactone dissolves very quickly, the effect of such lifting does not always last long enough. That is why PromoItalia researchers began experimenting with a variety of caprolactone that lasted a little longer than others, and invented an “x-factor” additive for it, thanks to which the resorption process, and with it the lifting effect, was able to be extended for a period of 10 months to 2 years , depending on the thickness (caliber) of the thread and the physiological characteristics of the patient. At the same time, the company’s specialists came up with special notches for their threads, thanks to the special “geometry” of which the lifting effect and revitalization of the skin from the use of threads increased dramatically. How is the production process organized?

The heart of the factory for the production of Dermafil Happy Lift™ threads is a room in which four specially designed, patented and manufactured machines cut caprolactone (it tends to dissolve in air, so the raw materials are stored in refrigerators in the warehouse and delivered to the workshops packed in aluminum, in small batches , only for one day of work) on threads of a given length and notches are applied to them under computer control, strictly observing their “geometry”, which is different for different codes (types) of threads. The accuracy of the operation of these machines is of paramount importance, because the fastening of the thread in the fabric and the future efficiency of its operation depend on the location and parameters of the notches. Each machine has two knives for cutting notches. To change the type of thread produced, the machine must be recalibrated. This is a complex, lengthy and expensive process, so the factory is interested in knowing in advance how many and what kind of threads they have to produce. Each machine undergoes external state control once a year for the accuracy of its work, and internal control once every three months.

After cutting, the threads are placed in a special container, from which a special employee takes several for quality control. The batch that has passed through it is sent to a special “Clean Room”, where the threads are connected to the needle. The “Chamber Bianca” is completely closed, the humidity, temperature and microbiological environment are controlled here, including by an external commission, which has the right to come here without warning. Only women work in the Clean Room, since their fine motor skills are initially better developed than the stronger sex. Using small machines, they attach the threads to the needles and immediately perform a tension test (the connection must withstand it).

In the second part of the Clean Room, the process of packaging finished threads takes place. At first, this is done by women, manually, and then by special automatic machines. The threads are packaged in cardboard, then in aluminum blisters. Packaging is strictly individual. The final packaging is medical paper with transparent film. Each package is marked with a description of what type of thread and needle is inside.

During the packaging process, the threads undergo a special drying process, as a result of which moisture and air are completely removed from the packaging, which is what allows the finished threads to be stored without refrigeration. Then the threads are sent for sterilization, each individually. At other factories, threads are often sterilized in several pieces, which is cheaper. However, it is safer, albeit more expensive, to do as in the production we represent. Sterilization is carried out using gamma rays or ethylene oxide. At the same time, special sterilization protocols are filled out, which are monitored each time by independent experts. Representatives of the Italian Ministry of Health also monitor the sterility of the threads.

As you already understand, comprehensive control over the quality of threads begins from the first stage of their production and continues until the finished product is sent to the warehouse. Each code (type) of threads from a certain batch has its own passport, in which each stage of production is recorded in the most detailed manner, starting with checking the quality of the source material. The passport indicates for whom this thread is being made, how many packages are in the order, the full characteristics of the thread, which needle (if any) and necessarily (!) each employee responsible for a particular stage of the work. He confirms that he has done his job correctly with a personal signature.

Each batch of threads is made with a reserve so that there are samples for testing. After sterilization, five packages are taken from each batch, three are sent to the warehouse for the entire shelf life of the threads, so that in case of complaints from customers, they can be picked up and checked. The two packages are tested in the most stringent manner. To begin with, check the coincidence of the label with the thread passport and the thread itself, the tightness of the packaging, and its sterility. Then the packages are opened and each thread is visually checked, its compliance with the label, and the needle’s compliance with the given one. The threads are measured, they must be no shorter than 5 percent of the given length and no longer than 15 percent of it, although the law (what a legal absurdity!) allows it to be exceeded... by 4 meters! Already using a high-precision apparatus, the caliber (thickness) of the thread is checked.

All threads must withstand a certain load, one or another weight, its specific value depends on the caliber of the thread and is recorded in special tables. The tension of the part of the thread with notches is checked separately. Threads with notches are tested only for straight tension, smooth threads (also available here) - both for straight and for tension with a knot tied. At this stage, additional sterility testing and microbiological testing also take place. If a batch with defects is identified, it is completely destroyed and remanufactured. If a fault is detected in the thread cutting machine, it is immediately stopped and recalibrated.

This very serious approach to the production of threads and their sterilization made it possible to set the shelf life for products from PromoItalia at five years.

Twenty percent of PromoItalia's profits are traditionally invested in research and modernization of production equipment. And some areas of production are a trade secret, which is really hunted by manufacturers of thread lifting products from China, Korea, and South America.

To maintain the quality of the finished product, it is also important that this is a purely Italian production, where highly qualified Italian citizens work, that is, it is a well-trained, but quite expensive workforce. The factory we represent employs more than 120 people (75 of them are in the Clean Room). Another 30 people on top of the 120 are office workers.

The company has its own recruitment program. The most difficult part is selecting women to work in the Clean Room. To begin with, they are accepted for a trial period of ten days. For five of them they wind the threads onto the packaging, for another five they attach needles to the threads. If a potential employee manages to fulfill more than 50 percent of the daily work quota, she is entered into a special database and then they are considered whether to take on a permanent job or... invite her to a temporary one. After all, the factory we represent can work at night in order to complete all orders on time.
