Spa peeling with Garra Rufa fish or my experience of going to Nariņas SPA

The intense pace of modern life leads to a person constantly experiencing stress. And the sedentary lifestyle of office workers provokes a decrease in immunity, circulatory disorders, swelling in the legs, and a feeling of fatigue. In rooms with installed split systems that dry out the air space, the skin ages prematurely, loses its elasticity and firmness.

Fish massage will help get rid of these and other problems. What are the features of this exotic procedure, what are its benefits? Are there any contraindications for this procedure?

What is fish peeling?

For many years, tourists in Thailand and Turkey have been offered fish peeling, and now this service is also widespread in salons in our country. The presented procedure attracts clients, first of all, with its exoticism. As often happens, curiosity takes over, and the desire to try something new and interesting turns out to be stronger than the fear of the unknown. Fish therapy, or fish peeling, as this technique is also called, has become a favorite among Russian consumers, and many salons today offer this unusual way to remove the stratum corneum.

Everyone has at least once performed a skin cleansing procedure at home, well known as peeling. Cosmetic companies specialize in creating entire lines of products designed to gently remove the stratum corneum of the epidermis. For this purpose, masks, creams and scrubs are widely used. There are specific products for each skin type.

Fish peeling is perfect for any skin type, and is distinguished by the fact that the removal of dead particles occurs with the help of live fish, which carefully pinch off pieces that are appetizing to them. The touch of the fish is completely painless, and the only discomfort can be expressed only in a slight tickle. For this purpose, a breed of fish called Garra rufu is used. Only they do a very high-quality cleaning of the skin surface in just 15 minutes.

Why do you need fish peeling?

Cleaning is necessary to remove dead skin particles. Epidermal cells go through their life cycle and die. By dying, particles of the stratum corneum interfere with normal skin regeneration, close pores, and interfere with oxygen saturation of the skin. To remove this unnecessary layer of cells, numerous cosmetic procedures have been developed aimed at gently cleansing the surface of the skin.

Peeling with fish is perhaps the most unusual method of such cleaning. Garra rufu fish eat the stratum corneum of the epidermis, doing it as gently and gently as possible. They stick to the surface of the skin and easily pinch off dead tissue softened in water. The procedure relaxes and restores strength. Traditional healers of the Middle East claim that there are many points on a person’s feet, by acting on which one can normalize the functioning of vital organs and systems of the human body. Peeling fish involuntarily act on these points and have a beneficial effect on the general condition. It is also believed that the saliva of this fish has a pronounced anti-inflammatory effect.

Applications and results of fish spa

Peeling with Garra Rufa fish is widely used in aesthetic medicine and cosmetology; the little “doctors” perfectly cleanse the skin and remove dead skin cells, thereby accelerating the process of its renewal. They also massage the skin, stimulating blood circulation and opening the pores. Thus, the procedure makes the skin soft, silky, healthier, and rejuvenates it.

The saliva of fish contains a special healing enzyme whose composition is close to dithranol, a substance that is often included in dermatological remedies for psoriasis, that is, their saliva has a healing, antiseptic and regenerating effect. Fish SPA therapy is an excellent remedy for the symptomatic treatment of psoriasis: Garra Rufa removes the skin on psoriatic plaques without touching its healthy areas. After this, patients experience long-term improvement.

Fish peeling can also be performed for other chronic skin diseases, for example: eczema, neurodermatitis, vitiligo and others. Of course, you must first consult with your doctor and take into account existing contraindications.

The fish are friendly and do not bite, they will only remove all excess from your skin

“Live” peeling is also a wonderful way of relaxation. Due to its effect on nerve endings, such micromassage (ichthyo-massage) stimulates muscle relaxation, relieving stress and fatigue. If you do not have a psychological barrier to such a procedure, then it can be very pleasant, may be accompanied by a slight tingling sensation, and for some it may be ticklish.

What fish are used for peeling?

Those who are faced with this exotic procedure for the first time often wonder what the name of the peeling fish is. Many people assume that the birthplace of Garra rufa fish is Pattaya, but this is a mistaken opinion. Small fish of the carp family live almost along the entire coast of the Middle East, in Turkey, Iran, Iraq and Syria. The size of representatives of this species can reach 12 cm in length, but in peeling salons fish no more than 2-4 cm are used.

There is an opinion that fish have teeth, and the visitor may leave after peeling not with clean skin, but with real bites. Don’t worry, this statement is just a myth realized by dreamers. Garra rufa will not bite you like piranhas, because they do not have teeth. A few centuries ago, with the help of these representatives of the sea coast, a disease such as psoriasis was treated. Of course, the effect of the fish cannot be compared with modern methods of treatment, but there were still some positive dynamics. The benefits of the procedures for getting rid of various types of dermatitis and eczema were also noted.

Currently, fish are not used for medical purposes due to their low effectiveness; their use is concentrated only in beauty salons.

The essence of the peeling procedure using fish

The length of one individual is no more than 12 cm, this is a species from the carp family, they live in the rivers of Middle Eastern countries; Turkey has even imposed a ban on their export from the country.
These fish are specially bred, so you can buy Garra Rufa everywhere, including in Russia, where this method is being successfully developed. This exotic procedure involves fish massaging human skin by pinching it. These “babies” have no teeth, so this is an absolutely painless and safe process. Little “doctors” are placed in special aquariums or pools. Most often, small aquariums are used in salons, where legs or arms are usually placed. Larger spas have Garra Rufa pools/tubs where you can immerse yourself completely to get the most out of your treatment. There are also two-person baths and sit-down units.

The little “doctor” can save you from many problems

The tank is filled with mineralized warm water (approximately +37°C), the fish feel great in such an environment, and human skin gets wet, which makes the task of natural “doctors” easier. Why do fish need this? This may not sound very pleasant to some, but this is how they eat. You probably won’t be sorry to part with the keratinized particles of the epidermis and feed them to the fish. And this is not the only effect that fish peeling gives.

The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes; you must first wash your feet or take a shower if you plan to be fully immersed, as well as remove nail polish and makeup from your face.

A large number of mini-salons with Garra Rufa can be found in tourist areas along the sea coast. While attracting customers, they often do not have doors, and tourists who pass by can watch the process. Those who have not heard of such a procedure before and saw the process by chance sometimes get scared, mistaking the fish for leeches, to which they have nothing to do. Such salons are everywhere; in Russia the procedure became available relatively recently and is becoming more popular every day.

Indications for fish peeling

First of all, peeling is recommended for everyone who dreams of soft and velvety skin. Fish therapy is an incomparable procedure that is definitely worth trying at least once. If the skin on your heels and feet seems rough and lifeless to you, and there are even small calluses on your hands, this is already an indication for fish peeling.

Moreover, the procedure is also prescribed by medical professionals for medicinal purposes. It has been proven that this particular peeling is the most gentle and has a therapeutic effect on the following diseases:

  • skin fungus;
  • eczema;
  • acne;
  • psoriasis;
  • neurodermatitis;
  • vitiligo;
  • lichen planus;
  • Rosacea.

The course of treatment is prescribed individually by the attending physician and depends on the severity of the disease.

Healing fish massage

Fish saliva contains medicinal enzymes that can be used to treat:

  • allergies and inflammations;
  • eczema and psoriasis;
  • fungal diseases.

It promotes skin regeneration and restores its elasticity, beautiful color, fresh and healthy appearance. By touching and pushing the skin with their lips, the fish perform a certain massage that improves blood flow, has a calming effect on the central nervous system, relieving leg fatigue and swelling.

Depressive and stressful conditions have become common conditions today, which a person does not even notice until a serious mental breakdown occurs. Thanks to the fish, you can get complete relaxation and incomparable pleasure. During the session, significant psychological relief will occur.

How is the peeling procedure performed?

1 session takes from 5 to 30 minutes. To do this, place a part of the body that needs gentle peeling in an aquarium with fish. As a rule, most often we are talking about the feet, because it is on this part of the body that the most keratinized particles are present; such peeling, as you might guess, is not suitable for the face. Hand peeling is also often carried out, and some salons also offer a procedure for the whole body: clients are immersed in an aquarium in swimsuits, where they are in water up to their shoulders.

There are certain requirements that are mandatory for all clients before diving:

  1. The part of the body that needs to be placed in the aquarium must be absolutely clean.
  2. The use of body oils and creams before the procedure is not allowed.

As soon as the fish are immersed in warm water, they immediately begin to nibble at the skin. At first the touches tickle, but after a couple of minutes the light tingling begins to bring pleasure. It is no coincidence that fish peeling is recommended for relaxation and relaxation. Usually the procedure is not carried out more than once a week. But special recommendations from the attending physician are allowed, who may recommend additional peeling sessions.

Peeling with fish during pregnancy

The procedure itself is absolutely safe for pregnant women. Let us remember that Garra rufa fish do not have teeth, so they are not capable of damaging the skin. But speaking about the safety of such peeling, we must not forget about the special requirements for water purity and additional sanitary standards.

In some European countries, opponents of this procedure have influenced the closure of a large number of salons. The problem was that the water in which the client was immersed did not meet all hygiene standards. The installed filters do not cope with the task assigned to them: with a high density of visits to the salon per day, water purification does not occur properly. In this regard, serious questions arise about whether to exfoliate fish and whether it is possible to contract skin diseases while doing so.

To date, there is no official inspection data that would confirm the harm of such a procedure. As for pregnant women visiting a beauty salon and diving into an aquarium with fish, there are also no contraindications. But we should not forget that the expectant mother’s body is weakened, and therefore requires additional care and attention. Is visiting a beauty salon dangerous during pregnancy? Not if the salon adheres to hygiene standards.

Fish peeling is becoming increasingly popular in our country; many beauty salons purchase these small fish and special aquariums equipped with powerful filters. Such demand for the procedure is due not only to its exotic nature, but also to the amazing result. Within just 15 minutes of being in the aquarium, complete skin renewal occurs. Many people note that after fish therapy, a hygienic manicure is not required; the nails are immediately ready to apply cosmetic varnish. The cost of this service is quite reasonable, the difference is due only to the level of the salon and the region in which they offer this amazing peeling.

Health and healthy lifestyleFish therapy

Treatment with fish involves immersing a person in a pool into which small fish are released. The appetite of these marine representatives is quite good. In general, this procedure consists of a sick person who has skin problems immersing himself in a pool and the fish begin to eat the dead part of the problem skin. At the same time, areas of healthy skin are absolutely not affected.

A healthy person can also be a visitor to such a procedure; such therapy is recommended to remove rough skin cells.

At first, when immersed in the pool, a person feels the attack of fish, as a result of which the wounds open. Afterwards, there is a slight feeling of discomfort on the skin, but it all goes away in the next few minutes and the discomfort is replaced by relaxation and a pleasant tingling sensation throughout the body. The use of small fish is due to the fact that they need active nutrition for faster development. This procedure has a positive effect not only on a person’s physical condition, but also on the psychological one.

One of the conditions for proper treatment is filling the pool with thermal water, which is rich in minerals.

For the first time, this procedure appeared in Turkey. The positive effect was achieved due to the fact that in thermal springs the water temperature at any time has the same indicators, i.e. is permanent. The action is similar to what happens in a jacuzzi. Thus, the body temperature rises and the skin softens. It is clear that it is not difficult for fish to process such a surface.

Two types of fish are used for medicinal purposes. The former remove the rough surface of the skin, and the latter then treat pathological areas of the skin with saliva, thereby disinfecting. This speeds up the wound healing process.

Mineral water in the pool also plays a positive role in a person’s recovery. The salt, selenium, and zinc included in its composition help in this. When drinking such water on an empty stomach in the morning in the amount of five to six glasses, a release of manifestations of the disease to the surface of the skin was observed. After this, recovery occurs in the near future.

Treatment with fish is widely used for psoriasis and other dermatological diseases, and also has a positive effect on people with gynecological disorders, problems with the gastrointestinal tract and the musculoskeletal system.

Nowadays there is little that will surprise a modern resident of a big city. At the same time, competition between beauty salons is growing. Therefore, clients are increasingly being offered exotic services, which, as a rule, have long been known in Europe and Asia, but are new for Russia.

An example of such a service was peeling with Garra Rufa fish. Sometimes this service is called ichthyomassage, fish therapy or Fish Spa.

In addition to cosmetic, fish peeling also has a psychotherapeutic effect, since watching fish, soft touches of fins, and flowing water promote relaxation, restoration of vitality and normalization of mood.

Fish of the Garra Rufa species belong to the carp family. They live for about 10 years and can grow up to 12 cm in length. Salon fish rarely live to such a respectable age.

They were first used for medicinal and then for cosmetic purposes in China and Thailand. Then fish spa salons began to open in Europe.

They have a therapeutic effect thanks to:

  • the ability to remove dead skin cells without mechanical damage: fish do not have hard teeth, so they can only gnaw off epithelium that is ready for exfoliation;
  • fish saliva contains a special component Diethanol, which promotes the healing of skin microtraumas;
  • The water in which the fish swim is enriched with mucus, which is secreted by the skin of the fish, and also has a beneficial effect on the skin.

It is the fact that the fish do not have sharp teeth that determines the safety of the procedure for the client. They scrape off the surface layer of the skin like a grater without damaging its integrity. Therefore, no viruses or pathogenic bacteria can penetrate the body and cause disease.

But salons now don’t always use harmless fish. Since the demand for them is now huge, fish of other species can be sold under the guise of Garra Rufa. They are similar in appearance, but have teeth. For which they are nicknamed Chin-chin.

Some salon owners specifically purchase them, noticing that clients prefer the distinct sensation of bites and a more pronounced peeling effect, and therefore come more often.

Sellers of fish peeling services claim that the infection is nowhere to be found, citing the fact that the fish undergo veterinary control, the water in the aquarium is changed, and the like. That's all true, but:

  • the fish are checked only once, when they “start” work, no one inspects them every day and after each client (and they can have 10-12 clients per day);
  • there are no serious monitoring procedures or official requirements from the SES for the operation of equipment for fish therapy, the timely change and treatment of filters and containers for keeping fish and the implementation of serious monitoring procedures;
  • it will not be possible to treat the fish themselves after each client, since they are alive and no means of disinfection or sterilization can be used on them;
  • No one in the salons closely monitors that there are no cuts or injuries on the skin of the client’s treated area.

In most US states, fish peeling is prohibited due to the fact that there is no effective way to disinfect fish peeling equipment.

They refuse the service in Thailand and the UAE due to the fact that during procedures using Garra Rufa and Chin-chin fish there is a risk of contracting mycoses, bacterial and viral infections, including such serious ones as HIV and viral hepatitis. Also, fish that peel can become a source of worm infection.

In addition to cosmetic benefits, fish therapy also has a therapeutic effect on a number of diseases accompanied by skin manifestations:

  • psoriasis;
  • vitiligo;
  • lichen planus;
  • ichthyosis and hyperkeratosis;
  • neurodermatitis;
  • children's allergic eczema;
  • skin mycoses;
  • eczema;
  • acne disease.

Hollywood peeling is a procedure that contains phytic acid. Read patient reviews at this link.

The procedure can be performed at any age, even small children. Treatment with fish is contraindicated only if:

  • lupus erythematosus;
  • psoriatic neuroderma;
  • malignant neoplasms of the skin.

No serious preparation is required. The only condition that must be observed in order to get a more pronounced effect from the procedure is not to use moisturizer and other cosmetics for 1-2 days before the procedure.

  • Usually before the procedure the skin is washed with soap. In a number of salons, a disinfectant is additionally applied to the skin.
  • Then the arms up to the elbows or feet up to the ankles are immersed in an aquarium with fish.
  • If you need to cleanse the entire skin of the body, then the procedure uses pools or baths in which fish are first placed.

Typically the procedure lasts from 10 to 30 minutes. To perform a pedicure, you need about 300 fish; to treat your hands, 150-200 fish are used.

During the session, the client feels a tickling, sometimes a slight tingling sensation. The overall feeling is pleasant and relaxing.

In some salons, before diving into an aquarium with fish, the skin of the hands or feet is first steamed in warm water. This allows you to get a more pronounced effect from fish peeling due to the fact that softened and swollen skin is easier for fish to gnaw.

Usually, in slightly warm aquarium water, the upper stratum corneum of the skin absorbs enough water and softens only after 7-10 minutes after immersion in the aquarium. And after steaming, the fish can start working immediately.

Doctor fish of the carp family can create a small miracle for skin affected by psoriasis. In recent years, non-traditional treatment of psoriasis with fish has gained immense popularity due to its high effectiveness. We will try to find out how innovative this technique is in this article.

Small healers include two species of fish: Cyprinion macrostomus and Garra Rufa, both belonging to the same family. Under natural conditions, fish live in water sources of the Middle East at fairly high water temperatures (up to + 37 degrees) and the main source of food is plankton. In health and spa centers, miracle doctors have perfectly adapted to new conditions, where their food is the dead skin tissue of people.

In order for the effect of treatment to last longer, it is important that both types of fish take part in the procedure, one of which removes the dead layer of skin, and the other secretes a special saliva that has disinfecting and wound-healing properties.

Unfortunately, some unscrupulous spa centers may use other fish called Chin Chin instead of fish from the Garra rufa family. Chin Chin fish resemble Garra rufa in appearance, but, unlike the latter, they have teeth and can cause significant harm to the patient’s skin. Bleeding wounds easily become infected and, as a result, a trip to a spa salon can result in expensive treatment for the patient. Be very careful when choosing centers and trust only well-tested large medical institutions.

Treatment of psoriasis with fish in a sanatorium with thermal springs saturated with selenium and zinc gives the greatest effect. The bathing procedure itself also has a psychological factor - fish that treat psoriasis surround the patient in a flock and begin to lightly pinch the skin, creating an additional relaxing and calming effect.

Under the influence of mineral water and pinching fish, the scabs soften, the crust comes off and the wound opens - here the second type of fish comes into play, which with their unique saliva disinfect the wound and promote its speedy healing.

Zinc, coupled with selenium, contained in water in fairly high concentrations, helps the epidermis to recover quickly and easily. Garra rufa fish surround the patient and lightly hit his body, providing a relaxing massage that allows the patient to relax.

Treatment at thermal springs usually lasts three weeks, with the patient taking healing baths for 8 hours daily. It is also recommended to maintain a drinking regime - drink about 2 liters of water per day.

In 2006, a pilot study was conducted in Austria involving 67 patients with severe psoriasis. The results of the study were published in the journal “Evidence-Based Correction and Alternative Medicine” in English.

For 3 weeks, the experiment participants took two-hour baths with doctor fish every day. The number of fish directly depended on the severity of the disease - from 250 to 400. After the bath, the patients took a solarium for several minutes.

After the end of the experiment, 72% of participants noted a significant improvement in their condition and 87% were satisfied with the results of the treatment. No side effects were identified.

You can clearly see the results of the study in these photographs (where the row on the left is before the experiment, the row on the right is the result after the experiment):

Doctors' opinions about the effectiveness of treating psoriasis with this method differ: some consider it an excellent alternative method, others are categorically against it. The most popular argument of opponents of ichthyotherapy is the possibility of infection through small open wounds left after peeling the skin with doctor fish.

They also believe that fish can damage healthy skin, but there is no clear evidence for these arguments.

If you follow a set of procedures aimed at fighting the disease both externally and internally, a visible effect occurs by the end of the third week: the skin softens significantly, plaques, itching and redness disappear. Coupled with relaxing psychological factors, a combination of favorable natural factors and a wonderful climate, the disease recedes for at least a year.

Benefits in treatment:

  • relaxation;
  • prevention of fungal diseases;
  • improvement of skin condition;
  • skin rejuvenation;
  • reduction of swelling of the legs;
  • improving blood circulation in the blood vessels of the legs.

Treatment of psoriasis with fish has no age restrictions, but is strictly prohibited if:

  • lupus erythematosus;
  • neurodermatitis;
  • oncology;
  • diabetes;
  • acute infectious and inflammatory diseases.

The body's defense mechanisms in patients with circulatory disorders are significantly reduced, which creates a risk of infection in the smallest wounds.

When choosing a resort or spa, be sure to consult with your doctor and notify him of any chronic diseases.

No special preparation is required for fish therapy, but the following conditions are recommended:

  • a couple of days before treatment, you should stop using any external cosmetics;
  • drink at least 2 liters of water daily;
  • maintain personal hygiene
  • After the procedure, do not use creams, oils and other products that can irritate the skin for several days.

Keeping doctor fish in a home aquarium is not a task for beginners, because... Pets are very picky about water temperature and food. Outwardly, this is an unremarkable fish about 8 centimeters in size, able to crawl on glass and capable of literally escaping from its owner.

Garra rufa loves warm, clean water with a pH of 7.3, plenty of oxygen and light, and is quite aggressive towards other fish. Warm water also softens the patient's skin, making it easier for the fish to grasp it with their mouths (garra rufa has no teeth). To create warm water, you will need to purchase a special water heater with a thermostat.

The biggest problem in aquariums is the presence of highly toxic ammonia and its compounds. Ammonia is produced from the secretions of garra rufa fish and the decomposition of remaining food and droppings. Nitrobacter and Nitrosomonas bacteria are the main neutralizers of these toxic substances and are found in gravel, sand and even filter materials.

Therefore, the larger the number of fish in the tank, the higher the bacteria count should be maintained to prevent ammonia and nitrate buildup.

Chlorine is very dangerous for fish, so you will need an anti-chlorine solution to treat the water and a pH regulator. If you use chlorinated water, all friendly bacteria will die, which will have an extremely negative impact on the fish themselves. At home, it is extremely difficult to recreate natural and comfortable conditions for keeping these little doctors, so it is better to resort to the help of spa salons or special centers.

The whole essence of the procedure for treating psoriasis with garra rufa fish is clearly demonstrated in this cartoon:
